Shawna N.M. Barnes

Chief Creative Officer / Founder
Shawna is a solution oriented person; always looking to help where she can. From early on, she sought to fill a need where she saw a need. Whether that was as a combat medic in the US Army, program director for four group homes and a day program in Arizona, a graphic designer turned print shop owner in Maine, or digital accessibility specalist and website designer in Wisconsin.

Finding ways to work around and in conjunction with her service acquired disabilities is how she was brought to her current professions of web designer and owner of The Nook.

S. Barnes Designs, LLC

Shawna owns and operates a website design and management business that officially relaunched in January 2023. She specializes in creating accessible and barrier free websites (like this one!) that meet or exceed WCAG 2.2 standards. The HQ for S. Barnes Designs, LLC is now located here at The Nook.

Myasthenia Gravis News

Shawna writes a weekly column for Myasthenia Gravis News. Myasthenia gravis is the neuromuscular autoimmune disease that she has. As a result, you may see her without any mobility aid, or using a cane, crutch, or her wheelchair.

Travis Mills Foundation Ambassador

Shawna started at the Travis Mills Foundation (TMF) by teaching art as therapy classes when the foundation opened in 2017. Once she moved from Maine to Wisconsin, she was asked to be an ambassador. The TMF is another organization whose mission is very near and dear to Shawna's heart and own personal life objectives.

Combat Veteran

Shawna served in the US Army as a combat medic from 2007-2011. It was during her deployment to Iraq where her health began to deteriorate. She was medically retired in 2011. Since then, she was fought to find purpose and solutions that allow her to work through/around/with her disabilities.

See My Art, Inc Board Member

In December 2023, Shawna was voted in as a board member for the non-profit organization, See My Art, Inc. SMART is a not-for-profit corporation that inspires, empowers, validates, and supports people with all abilities through art. Healing through art is something that Shawna has lived since her medical retirement in 2011; so naturally when approached she couldn't say no.
